What is generative engine optimization (GEO)? A plain-English guide for business owners

The short answer

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving how often, and how accurately, your brand appears in answers produced by AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI Overviews. You'll also hear it called answer engine optimization (AEO), AI SEO or LLM optimization. They describe the same goal.

Why it matters now

A growing share of buyers start their research by asking an AI assistant, for example "What's the best CRM for a 10-person team?" or "Which roofers near me have good reviews?" The assistant answers with a short list. If you're not on it, you may never get considered, even if you rank on Google.

At the same time, AI Overviews at the top of Google results answer many informational questions directly, which can reduce clicks to websites. Being cited inside those overviews is becoming as important as ranking beneath them.

How AI tools decide what to say

Most AI assistants combine two things: what the underlying model learned in training, and live retrieval of web pages for the question at hand. In practice that means they favor:

  • Pages that already rank well in traditional search;
  • Sources that are clearly structured and directly answer the question;
  • Brands that are consistently described the same way across the web;
  • Brands that independent, trusted sites mention and recommend.

That's why GEO is best seen as an extension of good SEO, not a replacement.

GEO vs. SEO

A 7-step GEO starter checklist

  1. Ask the AIs. Run the 10–20 questions your buyers ask through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google. Note who gets mentioned and what's said about you.
  2. Fix your entity data. Make your name, description, services, locations and founding details consistent on your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and major directories. Add Organization schema.
  3. Answer questions directly. Give key pages clear headings and one-paragraph answers near the top, followed by detail. Add FAQs and comparison tables where helpful.
  4. Publish something original. Proprietary data, pricing guidance, case examples and expert opinions give AI something worth citing.
  5. Earn mentions. Get included in industry "best of" lists, review platforms, trade publications and relevant communities.
  6. Check crawler access. Make sure your robots.txt doesn't accidentally block the AI crawlers you want, and that important content isn't hidden behind scripts.
  7. Measure monthly. Track the same prompts over time and watch referral traffic from AI tools in Google Analytics.

Common misconceptions

"Just add an llms.txt file." It can help AI tools navigate your site, but it isn't a ranking factor on its own. "GEO replaces SEO." The opposite: AI tools lean on the same authority signals. "Someone can guarantee placement in ChatGPT." Nobody can. Answers vary by prompt, user and model version. Focus on the signals you can influence and measure share over time.

FAQ

Is GEO the same as AEO?

Effectively yes. Generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) both describe optimizing for AI-generated answers. Some people use AEO more for voice and featured snippets.

How long does GEO take?

Technical and entity fixes can be picked up within weeks as AI tools re-crawl. Earning the third-party mentions that drive recommendations typically takes several months.
